Mr. James W. Boyd

After graduating with honours in Mechanical Engineering in 1970, Mr. James W. Boyd joined Dofasco Inc, one of the world’s leading steel companies, where he participated in its Management Training Program. He worked in Research from 1971-1978. He then transferred to Hot Mill Operations, where he worked as a Process and Quality Engineer. In 1985, Mr. Boyd was appointed Manager of the Hot Mill Roll Shops, where he was responsible for the design and implementation of a “state-of-the-art” roll shop in 1987, as well as specifying and implementing a comprehensive roll management system.

A co-inventor and patentee of an ultrasonic testing device for the detection of lamination in steel strip, Mr. Boyd has also authored several papers on the use of rolls and roll practices in rolling mills. He co-authored the chapter on automated roll grinding in the American Iron and Steel Society publication, Rolls for the Metalworking Industry, published in 1990. This is recognized as one of the foremost texts on rolls and roll practices.
